Lessons in Humility and the Promise of Spring

Life among others has a way of revealing the edges of our hearts. In the quiet of winter, when the world slows and the days stretch long, it is easy to believe we have things figured out. But spring comes with its wild unpredictability, its bursts of warmth followed by biting cold, its gentle rains that turn to torrents overnight. It reminds us that we are not in control. Growth, real lasting growth, requires surrender.

Humility is learned in the living, in the give and take of relationships, in the moments when our plans unravel and we are asked to meet each other with grace. On the farm, this lesson plays out in small ways every day. A season of too much rain humbles the most experienced grower. A stubborn heifer tests patience. A long day’s work is met with unexpected kindness. A neighbor lends a hand. A child's laughter breaks the weight of a task.

There is joy in these trials if we choose to see it. The mistakes that bring us low also bring us closer to one another and to the truth that we are always learning. We are shaped not only by our triumphs but by our failures, by the moments when we must ask for help, by the times we find ourselves needing to offer it.

Spring does not bloom all at once. The earth wakes slowly, stretching out from winter’s grasp with hesitant green shoots and cautious blossoms. It is a season of becoming, a reminder that growth takes time and that even the smallest bud holds the promise of something beautiful.

As we walk into this new season, may we embrace the lessons as they come. May we welcome the humbling moments as invitations to grow in wisdom, patience, and kindness. May we find joy in the process, knowing that every trial, like every seed sown, holds the potential for something good.
